After seeing Rabiul's body, who allegedly died in police custody, his brother-in-law has claimed the injuries the body bore are not from a road accident.
“The body had injuries from assault. There was blood on the nose and mouth, the soles of both feet, and his ankles were cracked. People don't get injuries like this from accidents,” said Rabiul's brother-in-law Rafiqul Islam at Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue.
He said Rabiul's family is currently going through a bad phase. “In this situation, they have not taken any decision whether they will take legal action or not.”
Rabiul's body was taken from Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue around 9pm on Wednesday. Later, the body was buried in the family cemetery at around 11am on Thursday.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Abu Torab Md Shamsur Rahman said they have found signs of injury on Rabiul's body from an accident.
He added that the hospital too did a preliminary observation on the body and found that Robiul's body bore injuries from an accident.
Rabiul's family had applied to Shahbag police station to take the body without it being autopsied, as they received the initial observation certificate, the DC said. “So, no post-mortem was done.”
The DC also said that Rabul's brother filed a case over the road accident at Bason police station. The process of identifying the person in the incident of vandalizing the police box and burning motorcycles is underway.
A case will be filed in this regard, added the official.
Meanwhile, regarding the other three detainees, who were in jail with Rabiul, the DC said they do not know anything about them.
“We only know about Rabiul,” he added.
Police arrested Rabiul and three others on charges of gambling on January 14. However, the police released three of them.
On January 17, a team of police went to the house of Rabiul and took a signature on a white paper from his wife.
After that, Rabiul's wife learned that her husband was dead.
Malek Khasru, officer-in-charge of Bason police station, said two sub-inspectors took Rabiul to the police station and they let him go from the police station on January 17.
However, on the way home, Rabiul was knocked down by a truck, he said.
Rabiul was taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, according to police.
Enraged by the death, local people, equipped with sticks, put up barricades on Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways on Wednesday morning, disrupting traffic movement.
Two policemen from GMP were withdrawn from their duty on Wednesday over the death.
The policemen are Mahbub and Nurul Islam, both assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) of Bason Police Station, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Abu Torab Mohammad Shamsur Rahman told UNB.
Meanwhile, a three-member probe committee headed by Additional Police Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police Md Delwar Hossain has been formed to investigate this incident, he added.
