BNP's mass sit-in program in Faridpur was marred on Wednesday by clashes between helmet-wearing miscreants and BNP.
BNP alleged that the leaders and activists of the ruling Awami League carried out the attack wearing helmets.
Additional Police Super (Sadar Circle) of Faridpur Sumon Ranjan Sarkar said some policemen were injured in this alleged attack.
However, it was not confirmed yet whether any leaders or activists were injured or not, he said.
According to the eyewitnesses, the miscreants detonated a cocktail about 1.5 hours after the start of this mass sit-in program in the city's Ambika Maidan. Then they started throwing bricks.
BNP leaders were initially shocked by the sound of the cocktail, but quickly turned around and resisted. Then, the miscreants fled the scene.
Pieces of bricks are seen lying everywhere on the road. Panic spread throughout the area.
A team of police led by Additional Police Super (Sadar Circle) Sumon Ranjan Sarkar was stationed at the eastern side of Chowrangi intersection.
The miscreants detonated another cocktail aiming at the police force while they were running away.
BNP leaders and activists gathered again and chanted slogans.
However, Sumon Ranjan Sarkar said the situation in the area was now under control.
The additional police super said opposition parties attacked the BNP program.
In response to the question of who are the opposition parties, he said there are several parties within the BNP. They can carry out this attack.
"We have arrested several people but their identity has not been confirmed yet,” he added.
The mass sit-in program in Faridpur was held as part of the nationwide program to realize BNP's 10-point demand including the resignation of the government, annulment of the illegal parliament, holding the next poll under a neutral government and the release of all leaders including BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
