Three members of newly formed gang “Nayan Bahini” including their second in command have been arrested over abducting 11 fishermen from Sundarbans.
Bagerhat Superintendent of Police KM Ariful Haque said this at a press conference at his office on Monday afternoon.
The arrested are Masum Faraji, 35, of Khuriakhali village of Sharankhola upazila, Hashan Kaviraj, 30, and Alamgir Hossain Howladar, 50, of Charduari village of Patharghata upazila of Barguna.
The SP said: “On December 9, some fishermen from Bagerhat and Khulna went to catch fish and crabs with permits from Chandpai, Sarankhola and Jiudhara stations in East Sundarbans. During this time, forest bandits kidnapped 11 fishermen between December 13-18 and demanded money from the family. On receiving information, the police rescued them from the bandits.”
Dhaka TribuneAccording to the fishermen, the bandits were arrested early Monday during a raid in the Shyala river area of Jayamoni village of Chila union in Mongla.
At that time, some weapons, two rods, a wooden canoe, a few pieces of nylon rope, a scotch tape, two flashlights and sticks of different sizes were seized from them.
Mongla Police Station OC (Investigation) Bikash Chandra Ghosh filed a case against the three arrested bandits as plaintiff and they will be sent to court.
Earlier on December 21, police rescued the 11 fishermen. They were reportedly subjected to torture for ransom.
