Clashes broke out on Saturday between BNP activists and the police at the party's pre-announced rally in Faridpur.
The clashes erupted when police blocked the party's mass rally from proceeding toward the Faridpur Press Club at about 12:30pm.
Since early morning, hundreds of policemen were stationed in front of the BNP office on Kathpatti Road as well as other important places of the city.
BNP Central Committee Vice-Chairman Advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury said that the government had obstructed a peaceful rally of the BNP.
BNP's Faridpur Divisional Organizing Secretary Shama Obaid claimed that 10 leaders and workers were arrested the night before the mass rally in Faridpur on Saturday.
However, police reported that six activists of the BNP were detained on Friday evening.
They are District Krishak Dal Member Secretary Murad Hossain, District Chhatra Dal Vice President Sohail Sheikh, Nationalist Lawyers Forum member Faruk Hossain, Aliabad Union BNP unit President Badsha Mia, and BNP activists Hashem Khan and Md Zahid Hossain.
Confirming the arrest, Faridpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Mohammad Imdad Hussain said that the accused were detained on the suspicion that they might carry out subversive activities.
“No one is being harassed against whom there is no such charge,” he added.
