Police on Saturday detained 16 Satkhira unit Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir leaders and activists after they brought out a procession.
They were held in the city's Haater Mor area at around 8am.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Satkhira Sadar police station Abu Jihad Mohammad Fakhrul Alam Khan said: "They were arrested possessing five cocktails, some banners, and sticks.”
The OC claimed that they intended to create chaos during the procession. “A case will be filed soon in this connection.”
In this regard, Azizur Rahman, publicity secretary of the upazila unit Jamaat said: "The police chased the party men when they started a peaceful protest demanding 10-points including restoration of the caretaker government system, formation of a neutral Election Commission, release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.”
Police arrested 16 leaders and activists of Jamaat and Shibir from the procession, he added.
