A nightguard at the Naldanga post office, who threatened to go on hunger strike and commit suicide demanding a pay raise, has been temporarily suspended from his job.
A letter was sent to Farid Uddin last Sunday through the post office.
Jhenaidah Inspector of Post Offices Afia Khatun issued the letter on December 15.
The letter mentions that disciplinary action has been taken against the employee for misbehaving and not protecting government assets and information.
On December 14, Farid Uddin threatened to go on a hunger strike and commit suicide unless his salary was increased.
When other employees came to the office, he refused to open the gates for them as well.
Later Kaliganj police station officers managed to open the doors, and took Farid Uddin out of the establishment.
Farid claimed that he was unfairly relieved from his post. He also mentioned that authorities did not send him any show cause notice as well.
He later said that he only makes Tk4,000 from his job at the post office, and has seven family members to feed.
Farid added that he went on a hunger strike because he could not meet all the expenses of his family due to the rising commodity prices.
In this regard, Naldanga Post Office Master Abdul Malek said only the officer who signed the letter can tell why Farid was suspended.
Bangladesh Post Office ED MA Hakim said that demanding a salary increment cannot be a crime.
“I have heard about the incident. We will take action after knowing why such action has been taken against him,” he added.
