101 yaba peddlers jailed in Cox’s Bazar

A Cox's Bazar court on Wednesday sentenced 101 yaba traders who surrendered in Teknaf of Cox's Bazar to one and a half years jail in drug case. 

At the same time, each of them was also fined Tk20,000 beside being acquitted from arms case.

Judge Md Ismail of Cox's Bazar District and Sessions Judge Court delivered the verdict in the afternoon. At the time, 17 people were present in the court. The remaining 84 people were shown absconding.

Public Prosecutor (PP) Faridul Alam of Cox's Bazar District and Sessions Judge Court confirmed the information to Bangla Tribune.

According to court sources, on 16 February 2019, 102 yaba traders surrendered at Teknaf Pilot High School ground. An accused named Sohail died in jail during the course of the case.

After surrendering, 350,000 yaba tablets and 30 illegal local weapons were seized from them.

The then OC (Investigation) ABMS Doha filed two separate cases under Narcotics and Arms Act against the surrendered accused in Teknaf Model police station.

Twenty-one witnesses were interrogated from the state along with the witnesses for the accused. The judicial proceedings of the case have been completed, including the presentation of evidence, the verification of test results, and the opportunity for the defendants to defend themselves.
