Four people including one Rohingya have been sentenced to death in Cox's Bazar for smuggling 1.3 million yaba tablets. At the same time each has been fined Tk50,000.
District and Sessions Judge of Cox's Bazar Mohammad Ismail delivered the verdict on Wednesday.
The convicts are Md Ayaz of Ukhiya's Balukhali Rohingya Refugee Camp-13 in Cox's Bazar, Md Billal, Azimullah and Abul Kalam.
They were present in the courtroom when the verdict was announced.
Advocate Faridul Alam Farid, public prosecutor of Cox's Bazar District and Sessions Judge's Court, said: “A RAB-15 team conducted a raid around 7:50pm on August 23, 2020 and seized a fishing boat carrying 1.3 million yaba tablets. Tk10,900 was also recovered from the boat. Md Ayaz and Md Billal were arrested on the spot while four-five others ran away sensing the presence of RAB members.”
“Naib Subedar of RAB-15 Md Harunor Rashid filed a case at Cox's Bazar Sadar model police station under the Narcotics Control Act, accusing Md Ayaz and Md Billal and four-five unnamed people,” he said.
“The investigating officer of the case, SI of RAB-15 Mohammad Sohail Sikder, submitted the charge sheet to the court on June 10, 2021. Later, the judge sentenced the accused to death after hearing the statements from the witnesses and observing the evidence,” he added.
