Students of Barisal Brojo Mohun (BM) College on Thursday noon held a rally on the campus and blocked Dhaka-Barisal highway to protest against reclaiming session fees earlier waived by the authorities.
As a result, movement of vehicles on the Dhaka-Barisal highway adjacent to Nathullabad bus terminal in the city was blocked for over an hour between 1pm-2pm.
Later, when the college authorities assured to consider their demands, the protesters left the highway and returned to the college.
Earlier, the students held a protest rally and press conference in the college campus demanding waiver of session fee.
Some of the students who participated in the movement said that the second-year honours students protested last year to reduce the session fee during the Covid pandemic. After that, the college authorities waived Tk600, but now they were asking the students to pay the amount again.
Rahim Shikder, a student who participated in the movement, told that around 2pm, the principal of the college Dr Golam Kibria assured to accept their demands.
“For this reason, we are returning to the college campus. We are also demanding that the assurance of the college would be given in writing. If not, the movement will continue on next day,” he added.
Principal of Barishal Brojo Mohun (BM) College Principal Dr Golam Kibria said that efforts are being made to resolve the matter by discussing with the protesting students and higher authorities.
