A leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was stabbed to death at Amburkhana area of Sylhet city Sunday night.
The deceased is AFM Kamal, former health affairs secretary of Sylhet district unit of BNP and former publicity secretary of Sylhet district Chhatra Dal and GS of Sylhet Law College.
Sylhet Airport Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mainul Zakir said that two unidentified assailants in a motorcycle attacked the BNP leader in his car at Amburkhana. After ahcking them indiscriminately, they managed to flee the scene, leaving him in a pool of blood, at about 9pm.
The police official said that Kamal was immediately taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
The OC said that the police have arrested a Chhatra Dal leader Raju in this connection and were interrogating him.
Efforts are on to arrest the assailants, he added.
Abdul Ahad Khan Jamal, president of Sylhet District Volunteers' Party from Osmani Hospital, said: “We are yet to know who stabbed him. We are not sure if this murder is due to political dispute.”
