Cyclone Sitrang has caused significant disruption in Barisal with the damage to power lines, fisheries and farms across the division.
Power lines were snapped and damaged at more than 3,000 points under the Barisal zone of the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB), causing losses of around Tk2.95 crore, according to a BREB statement.
The statement was sent to high authorities of the government, including the Barisal divisional commissioner, said Dipankar Mandal, supervising engineer of BREB Barisal zone.
According to preliminary data from six BREB Barisal zone offices (Barisal-1, Barisal-2, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi, Patuakhal and Bhola), 332 electric poles and 582 crossarms were broken, 119 transformers were damaged, wires were cut at 3,083 points with about 1,714m of cables damaged, and 495 insulators developed cracks.
The BREB Technical Branch is working on the repairs in coordination with contractors and associations concerned.
Meanwhile, fisheries in Barisal suffered losses of about Tk26 crore as many fish were washed away when ponds and fish enclosures overflowed due to the rains.
According to the initial damage information available from the Barisal Divisional Commissioner's office, 12,012 ponds and 1,573 hectares of farmland were damaged across six districts of the division. Altogether 11,189 fishermen and farm owners suffered losses.
At least 1,730 tons of fish and 7.1 million fish fries were lost.
About Tk12 lakh was lost due to the sinking of fishing trawlers and boats.
