Jessore uni registrar, 3 others sued over culling of 18 stray dogs

A case has been started over the culling of 18 stray dogs on the campus of Jessore University of Science and Technology (JUST).

Advocate Mahmud Hossain Bulu filed the case on behalf of People for Animal Welfare (PAW) Foundation at Jessore's Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Monday, said a press release.

The accused are JUST Registrar Md Ahsan Habib, Assistant Registrar (Estate and Security Section) SM Hasan Ali, Security Officer Md Munshi Moniruzzaman and Zakir Mia.

Jessore municipal workers started catching and injecting dogs with sedatives on the morning of September 28. The workers then buried the dogs when they lost consciousness, according to the release.

Students later came to know that 18 dogs had been culled and buried behind the academic building of the university.

There was widespread criticism after several news outlets reported on the incident.

Killing strays is a punishable crime under the Animal Welfare Act, said PAW Foundation.
