Cox's Bazar district administration has taken extensive preparations to deal with Cyclone Sitrang, as the district's ports were asked to hoist danger signal no six.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Cox's Bazar Md Zahid Iqbal said they have already started to evacuate people from Monday.
Authorities have also prepared 576 shelters where as many as 605,275 people can stay if cyclone Sitrang triggers damage. Besides, 104 medical teams are also on standby in cases of emergency.
A further 323 tons of rice, more than Tk8 lakh, 1,198 packages of dry food, 350 cartons of dry cakes, and 400 cartons of digestive biscuits have been stored for the people.
Upazila nirbahi officers (UNOs) were also instructed to take people safely to shelters before the storm.
Cox's Bazar District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Jahangir Alam said that a sufficient number of volunteer teams, Bangladesh Coast Guard, Naval Police, and 8,600 CPP members, 2,200 volunteers from Bangladesh Red Crescent Society have been prepared to tackle any emergency situation due to the possible cyclone Sitrang.
Meanwhile, tourist police at Cox's Bazar beaches have been advising people to keep a safe distance from the water since Monday morning.
Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Cox's Bazar Mohammad Abu Sufian said tourists have been banned from travelling to Saint Martin's Island due to the weather. The ban will continue until the weather improves.
Maritime ports of Mongla and Payra have been advised to lower local cautionary signal number 4 and to hoist danger signal no seven as the cyclonic storm Sitrang is approaching Bangladesh.
The cyclone is likely to hit the coast of Bangladesh early Tuesday.
Now, the storm is located 500km far from the coast.
