Police arrested three people for their alleged involvement in vandalizing the idol of Goddess Kali at Shailkupa in Jhenaidah.
The arrestees are- Asaduzzaman Hero, Tushar Hossain and Sajjad Hossain.
Superintendent of Police (SP) in Jhenaidah Mohammad Ashiqur Rahman said that on October 6, Shailkupa upazila unit Awami League Convener and Dhalharachandra Union Chairman Matiar Rahman's son, Dinar Bishas, former president of upazila Chhatra League, and a man named Jinarul staged obscene dancing and gambling with 15–16 girls on a boat in the Garai River.
The police later seized gambling equipment and a sound box.
The SP said the arrestees vandalized the idols at the 100-year-old temple out of rage.
Asaduzzaman Hero was detained by the police on October 12. Tushar and Sajjad, two further suspects, were also taken into custody. Dinar Biswas, however, is still missing.
SP Ashiqur Rahman noted that there will be no exceptions made for anyone who hurt religious sentiments in order to cause unrest.
