Ilish fishing ban: 57 fishermen jailed in Barisal in 3 days

At least 57 fishermen were sentenced to jail for different terms in Barisal division in three days for violating the ban on catching, selling, hoarding and transporting of ilish fish.

Besides, more than 150,000 metres of illegal fishing nets were seized till Monday morning.

The market value of the seized nets was Tk2.90crore, sources at Barisal District Fisheries Office said.

A total of 119 mobile courts conducted 462 raids and seized some 717kg of ilish, said the sources. 

Meanwhile, the court fined around Tk1 lakh and jailed the fishermen in 66 cases, said Mohammad Nasir Uddin, assistant director of the fisheries department on Monday.

He said that legal action is being taken against those who are flouting the ban on ilish. 

The government has imposed a 22-day ban on catching, selling, hoarding and transporting of ilish-- from October 7 to October 28 – to protect the safe spawning of the fish during its peak breeding period.
