Bhairab Highway police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Noor Hossain said the truck rammed through the footpath market after it tried to avoid a crash with a CNG-run autorickshaw, leaving three dead on the spot in the process.

Another had died on the way to the hospital, the SI added.

Locals rescued the injured and took them to area hospitals for treatment.

The police had seized the truck and the autorickshaw, the police official added.

A brake failure might have caused the accident, said Bhairab Highway police station OC Mozammel Hossain.

One person with severe injuries had been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he added.

In Brahmanbaria, two men were killed and two others were injured in a collision between three vehicles on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Bijoynagar upazila in the morning.

The accident took place in the Shoshoi area around 7am when a lorry hit an autorickshaw and a microbus as the lorry’s driver lost control of the vehicle, leaving autorickshaw passengers Mohon and Sumon dead on the spot and two others injured, said Sukhedra Basu, officer-in-charge of Khatihata highway police.

The lorry also overturned on the highway after hitting the vehicles.

Locals admitted the injured men to Madhabpur Upazila Health Complex.
