Sylhet man held over derogatory Facebook post on PM’s birthday

A 35-year old man was arrested in Jaintapur upazila of Sylhet on Thursday allegedly for making derogatory comments on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a Facebook post.

The arrestee was identified as Abdullah Al Mamun, son of Abdur Rahman from ward No 7 of Nijpat union in the upazila.

Police said that some local activists of Chhatra League caught him around 2pm near Chunahati Mosque on the Sylhet-Tamabil highway and handed him over to them.

According to police sources, Mamun made derogatory comments on the PM in a Facebook post on Wednesday. As it was her 75th birthday, the comment agitated the local Awami League and affiliate organizations activists. 

On Thursday, some Chhatra League leaders including upazila committee leader Nehal Paul detained Mamun and handed him over to the police, said Kazi Shahedul Islam, sub-inspector of Jaintapur model police station.

Mamun is currently in police custody and a case will be registered in this regard upon receiving a complaint.

Md Liakat Ali, general secretary of Nijpat union Awami League committee, said he will lodge the complaint.
