A nearly 25km tailback was reported from the Dhaka-Chittagong highway due to road renovation work in the Comilla area.
The gridlock has been increasing from the toll plaza of Meghna and Gomti bridge on the highway to Gauripur since Wednesday morning.
Passengers, drivers and patients on the road have been suffering due to the traffic congestion.
According to local sources, renovation work is underway near Gauripur Bazar in Comilla on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
Due to the 24-hour renovation work, only one vehicle on the Dhaka-bound lane of the highway can ply at a time.
A Padma Express bus passenger Mohammad Sohail left for Dhaka from Mudafarganj, of Laksam Upazila at around 6am. He was able to reach Gouripur Bazar in six hours.
“I came half a kilometer in four hours. I don't know how long it will take to reach Dhaka,” he added.
Daudkandi Highway Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jahangir Alam said, their team is working to try to reduce traffic congestion and added: “We request drivers and passengers to assist in government work.”
Suniti Chakma, executive engineer of the Roads and Highway Department of Comilla said: “We are doing the renovation work at a fast pace. Due to the puja, the pressure of movement is high with more vehicles.”
“As an alternative, I request people to use Dhaka road via Comilla-Brahmanbaria. Moreover, we will tell everyone to take time to go to Dhaka.”
He added that vehicle movement in that area will not be allowed for 28 days after the work is complete.
