College student kills herself after private video goes viral

Police on Wednesday recovered the hanging body of a college girl in Tangail, who allegedly committed suicide after a private video of hers went viral online. 

The deceased has been identified as Tania, a student at Mirzapur Women’s College.  

The incident took place at Bhatgram union of Mirzapur upazila on Wednesday, said Sheikh Abu Saleh Masud Karim, officer-in-charge of Mirzapur police station.

He also added that police recovered a suicide note that Tania wrote.

According to the family, Tania had a relationship with Sujon, son of son of Abdur Rashid of Burihati village.

Sujon allegedly blackmailed and took over Tk1 lakh from Tania. When Tania refused to pay further money, Sujon threatened and uploaded their intimate video on Facebook.

A case has been filed by the victim’s father with Mirzapur police station on Thursday against Sujon. 

He has been on the run since the incident was reported.

The victim’s father Harun Miah also alleged that Sujon also physically assaulted Tania 15 days ago when she was returning home from college.

As many as 45 students committed suicide on an average per month this year showing a worrying trend of vulnerable mental condition of Bangladesh’s future generation, according to a survey. 

From January to August of 2022, a total of 364 students killed themselves, according to the survey of Anchal Foundation, a non-profit foundation. 

Female students continue to outnumber the males in suicides, accounting for 60.71% of all suicides, or 221 people.
