Barisal medical college students protest against ACC drive on campus

The agitated teachers of Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (SBMCH) submitted a memorandum to the divisional commissioner on Wednesday, protesting against the drive of the Anti-Corruption Corporation (ACC) on the campus.

Amin Ul Ahsan, Barisal divisional commissioner, upon receiving the memorandum, assured that legal procedure and rules would be followed.

According to the memorandum, the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) members cautioned that they will take strict action if ACC violates any doctor.

On Tuesday, teachers and students of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital protested against a drive by the ACC to investigate several complaints against the hospital authorities.

Witnesses said on Tuesday morning, a team of five people led by Raj Kumar Saha, assistant director of the ACC Barisal office, conducted the drive to investigate several complaints including doctors not performing government duties properly, and being busy with patients in private chambers rather than being at the hospital.

ACC officials claimed that they have found the complaints to be true.

It is reported that the hospital’s doctors Anwar Hossain Bablu and Amitabh Sarkar saw 300-400 patients daily in their private chambers instead of performing government duties.

The patients complained before the ACC that not only these two doctors, but other doctors neglected their duties in the same way.

When ACC wanted to see the biometric attendance list of the doctors for one week, the college principal, Moniruzzaman Shahin refused to give any information and became involved in an argument with ACC.

Later, at around 10:30pm, the doctors came and started giving biometric attendance in the principal's room.

After the ACC team left, Dr Moniruzzaman Shahin complained before the journalists that the ACC team had misbehaved with him.

Regarding the complaints of doctors spending more time in private chambers, the principal said that there is no instruction from the government that private chambers would be closed.

Deputy Director of ACC Integrated District Office Debbrata Mandal did not give any official statement about the operation.
