ACC summons Cox's Bazar MP’s wife to account for illegal wealth

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has summoned Shaheda Begum, wife of Zafar Alam, the lawmaker representing the Cox's Bazar 1 constituency, accusing her of amassing assets worth crores through illegal means.

The ACC has launched an official probe into her assets, according to a notice, dated July 21 and signed by ACC Deputy Director Khan Md Meezanul Islam.

Shaheda Begum has been accused of earning crores by encroaching on government land, extortion, drug dealing and illegal extraction of sand. 

In view of this, the deputy director of the ACC Integrated District Office in Cox’s Bazar has been instructed to take necessary measures after the investigation.

Cox's Bazar District Office Deputy Director Md Monirul Islam said: “We have started an investigation into the assets of Shaheda Begum.”

“If illegal assets are found in the investigation, appropriate action will be taken against her,” he added. 

Responding to queries on the matter, Shaheda Begum said: "I have not received any kind of notice from the ACC, I found out through social media.”

Saying that it could be a conspiracy against her because she is a school teacher, she said: “The locals know about me well. However, if I receive such a notice, I will contact them legally.
