Robbers hijack bus, gang rape passenger in Tangail

A group of robbers gang raped a female passenger after hijacking a bus and stealing the valuables of other passengers in Tangail on Tuesday night.

The members of the robber gang fled from the bus in Raktipara area of Madhupur upazila early on Wednesday morning.

The 30-year-old rape survivor from Kushtia filed a case of rape and robbery at Madhupur police station on Wednesday afternoon, said Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Mazharul Amin.

The victim is currently being treated at Tangail General Hospital.

Quoting passengers, Tangail Superintendent of Police Sarkar Mohammad Qaiser said the bus of Eagle Paribahan, which had around 24 people on board, was heading to Chittagong from Kushtia when a group of 10 robbers with backpacks boarded the bus at midnight from the Hatikumrul intersection in Sirajganj.

“They took control of the bus after it arrived in Tangail's Basail upazila's Natiapara area on the Dhaka-Tangail road and blindfolded passengers and bus staff, tied their hands with ropes, and looted valuables from them, including cash and gold ornaments,” he added.

The accused then gang raped the woman passenger several times, said the police officer.

Around 3:30am on Wednesday morning, the members of the bandit gang ran away after overturning the moving bus in a sand pit near the Raktipara Jame Masjid.

Later, locals rushed to the spot and saved the passengers.

SP Sarkar Mohammad said several teams including the Detective Branch of police are working in the field. “Hope the accused will be arrested soon.”
