‘Shushuk’ weighing 100kg recovered in Tangail

A rare species of river dolphin or “Shushuk”, weighing around 100kg, was recovered from the Dhaleshwari River in Tangail's Nagarpur on Sunday.

This fish was caught in the spear of a young man named Sentu in the morning.

According to locals, when the man threw the spear or “Borshi” into the river, a small Boal fish got stuck in it.

While trying to retrieve the fish, a huge fish got stuck while swallowing the Boal fish. After seeing the huge Shushuk, Sentu got scared and started screaming.

Later, locals nearby rushed to the spot and brought the fish to the shore.

Thousands of curious people gathered at the scene to catch a glimpse of the rare fish.

The Shushuk was taken to Jangalia market and was sold for Tk15,000.

Nagarpur Upazila Fisheries Officer Machum Billa said this type of fish is on the way to extinction. “Had it been alive, we would have freed it,” he added.

Meanwhile, Tangail Divisional Forest Officer Sajjaduzzaman told Dhaka Tribune that it is forbidden to catch such fishes.

"If caught in one's net, the fish should be released. This fish is from the river. Action will be taken after an inquiry in this regard," he said.
