COCC polls: Man held on his way to buy votes

A man was detained in Comilla on Tuesday while he was going to buy votes for the City Corporation polls, said police.

The detainee was identified as Md Faruk, 31, hails from Gulabari area of Comilla sadar upazila. 

He was detained from Pathuria Para, Ward 17 of the city in the afternoon, Comilla Additional Superintendent of Police Sohan Sarkar confirmed.

He mentioned that photocopies of about 200 voter ID cards and Tk58,000 in cash were recovered from him. 

Faruk was handed over to the Judicial Magistrate, he added.

Meanwhile, Comilla is gearing up for the City Corporation polls scheduled for Wednesday. 

Election campaigns ended on Monday midnight and law enforcers have been deployed throughout the city on Tuesday. 

For additional security, CCTV cameras have been installed at all the polling centres. 

Comilla city residents will cast their franchise through electronic voting machines (EVMs) at all polling stations to elect their mayor among five candidates.
