As many as 650 educational institutions in Sylhet have been ordered to shut down by authorities due to the worsening flood condition in the district.
District Primary Education Officer Sakhawat Ershed told Dhaka Tribune the rising floodwaters forced authorities to keep at least 418 schools closed for the time being, he added.
Meanwhile, Secondary Education Officer Abu Saeed Md Abdul Wadud said a total of 222 institutions have been flooded in the district, and of those 185 institutions were closed.
The terrible flood situation in Sylhet has taken a tragic turn due to a downhill onrush of water and heavy rainfall.
Although the showers have subsided in the district in the last two days, the water levels in rivers and haors of Sylhet rose two more inches due to the onrush this morning.
Sylhet Sadar, Companiganj, Gowainghat, Jaintapur, Kanaighat, and Zakiganj upazilas have been inundated with flood water, and affected as many as two million people.
According to the Sylhet Water Development Board, Surma River was flowing 47cm above its danger mark on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the floods have triggered a power outage in different upazilas and Sylhet city, hitting hard some 1.15 million consumers of Bangladesh Power Development Board and Palli Bidyut Samiti.
Two sub-stations of the Development Board and two sub-stations of Palli Bidyut Samity have been shut down due to the rise in floodwaters, reports UNB.
Meanwhile, at least four people have been killed on Wednesday due to the worsening flood condition of the district.
Till Wednesday, at least 6,475 people have taken shelter in safe houses across the district.
Various roads in the city have become impassable due to flooding, with some rivers still flowing above the danger level.
