A case has been started against the former in-charge of Gazipur’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in connection with the death of 11 zebras in January.
Tabibur Rahman’s successor, Rafiqul Islam, filed the case under the Animal Welfare Act at Sreepur police station on Thursday.
“Tabibur is accused of irregularities in government work regarding the death of 11 zebras, mismanaging the park, destruction of property and corruption,” said Inspector Mahfuz Imtiaz Bhuiyan.
Incumbent in-charge Rafiqul said Tabibur had failed to promptly inform his seniors of the death of 11 zebras.
“He did not even file a general diary in this connection … In addition to the loss of state property, animals were treated in a cruel manner,” Rafiqul added.
Eleven zebras and a lion died at the park in January and a tiger died in February.
Later, the authorities ordered a probe into the deaths, and three officials — the project director, the veterinary officer and in-charge of the park — were removed from their posts to ensure an impartial investigation.
