Pistols, not chocolates, found in govt official’s consignment from Italy

Customs officials discovered two 8mm pistols and 60 rounds of bullets from a consignment of “household goods” at the Chittagong Customs House on Sunday.

The consignment was sent from Italy by one Rajib Barua to his childhood friend Majumdar Kamrul Hasan, an income tax officer and resident of Agrabad Govt CGS Colony of the port city.

Salahuddin Rizvi, deputy commissioner of Chittagong Customs House, confirmed the matter. On a tip-off, customs officials opened the consignment and found the weapons in it, he said.

Kamrul’s wife Umme Salma told Dhaka Tribune that Rajib Barua is her husband’s childhood friend. Rajib himself was a resident of the same colony, she said.

“We were expecting chocolates, and toiletries. I have no idea regarding the firearms,” she said.

Kamrul has been living in the area for the last 30 years. He is also involved in construction business along with his brother. He is also the organizing secretary of the colony’s association.

Chittagong Customs House Commissioner Mohammad Fakhrul Alam said a criminal case would be filed against the recipient and the sender. The weapons and ammunition would be handed over to the police.
