A Buddhist monk was hacked to death in Khagrachhari town early on Monday.
The deceased was identified as 52-year-old Bishuddha Mohather. He was the principal of Dharmasukh Buddhist monastery of the town.
The monk had been engaged in preaching Buddhism and humanitarian works for the last 30 years.
“The incident may have taken place between 2am and 4am,” said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khagrachari police Muhammad Rashid.
The mobile phones of the monk and some valuables of the monastery have been missing.
He said that they were investigating the incident to arrest the culprits.
Younger brother of the monk Piaeong Marma said the locals found the body lying in his bedroom in a pool of blood. There were signs of sharp injuries on his head and back.
The locals expressed anger over the killing of the Buddhist monk.
Thousands of people gathered the Gugrachari Dharmasukh Buddhist Monastery near the Khagrachhari-Rangamati Road in the morning after hearing the news of the murder.
They demanded a proper investigation into the incident and punishment of the culprits.
