A Barisal court has sent an Awami League leader in Jhalakathi to jail in a narcotics case.
Law enforcers detained Abu Saeed Khan at Barisal airport on Sunday afternoon for possessing yaba tablets.
Abu Saeed, a former district unit president of Chhatra League and also the chairman of Keora Union Parishad of Jhalakathi, was carrying the tablets in a cigarette packet. He was later handed over to the nearest police station.
Police filed a narcotics case against Abu Saeed who was taken to court on Monday noon. Barisal Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court Judge Shamim Ahmed sent him to jail after a hearing.
Kamlesh Chandra Haldar, officer-in-charge (OC) at Barisal airport, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
Abu Saeed was a passenger of a Novo Air flight from Barisal to Dhaka scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
A lighter placed inside a cigarette packet was spotted by the airport authorities while scanning the detainee’s belongings. The tablets were found hidden inside the packet.
