Authorities at Gazipur’s Bangabandhu Safari Park have reported another death of a zebra, taking the total number of dead black and white stripes at the park to ten in this month.
On Saturday, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said in a media statement that two Zebras became ill and that park authorities were taking steps as advised by the medical board formed to look into the deaths.
One of the two ill Zebras died later in the day, Assistant Forest Conservator Md Tabibur Rahman, the in-charge of safari park, told Dhaka Tribune.
Between January 2 and 25, nine zebras at the Safari Park died.
Authorities said they died within 20 to 25 minutes after experiencing a sudden rise in their body temperature and breathing difficulties. According to them, they died from bacterial infections and fighting.

After reviewing test results and other facts, experts ruled that five of the zebras died from infections with five kinds of bacterium and the four others died after fighting each other.
Former Chief Veterinary Officer and specialist Dr ABM Shahidullah, however, told a media call on Tuesday that male zebras fight over breeding, which is not uncommon in zoos or safari.
Last year, black and white stripes took over Gazipur Safari Park with the arrival of new zebra foals, as the breeding season began.
The total number of zebras in the park was 31, and of them, 15 were male and 16 female. Park authorities were delighted to see the zebras in good health.
