The West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited cut the electricity connection of Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College due to outstanding electricity bills on Thursday.
However, the electricity connection to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, located on the same campus, remains functional.
Officials said Sher-e-Bangla Medical College owes Tk48,86,225 to the West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited. The medical college, however, did not pay the bills despite receiving several letters in this regard.
Amjad Hossain, executive engineer of The West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited (Sales and Distribution Division-1), said that there are two separate meters for the hospital and college.
Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital has uninterrupted power supply, the official said.
Dr Moniruzzaman Shahin, principal of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College said they have requested the West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited to keep the electricity connection operational till the first week of July.
“It is not possible to get allotment now as it is June. Due to this, there is no opportunity to pay the dues at the moment.”
