Policy dialogue on Chittagong’s urban development held at East Delta University

East Delta University's Department of Public Leadership, Management and Governance (DPLMG) has successfully launched its much-anticipated "Policy Dialogue Series', aiming to foster meaningful policy discussions and idea sharing among various stakeholders for the betterment of society. 

The campus of East Delta University (EDU) came alive on Friday with the vibrant presence of distinguished guests of different fields, marking a significant milestone in shaping the future of Chittagong, reads a press release.

Presided over by the esteemed Vice Chancellor of EDU, Professor M Sekandar Khan, the event featured a keynote speech delivered by Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan, the pro vice Chancellor of Independent University. 

He emphasized the pressing need for sustainable urban development policies and their implications for Chittagong, saying: “A lack of coordination exists among the institutions involved in policy-making at various levels, which consequently leads to a lack of accountability.” 

Professor Khan referred to Chittagong as the economic hub of the country and elaborated on the significance of implementing effective monitoring mechanisms in the policy-making of urbanization.

The dialogue was skillfully moderated by Tasmeem Chowdhury Bonhi, chairperson of the DPLMG, who ensured an engaging and insightful conversation.

Sayeed Al Noman, the founding vice chairman of EDU, emphasized the necessity of formulating a comprehensive and strategic master plan to ensure effective and productive policies in Chittagong. 

He emphasized the crucial role of proper legislation in facilitating the implementation of such plans. While plans may evolve and adapt over time to meet changing needs, it is imperative to undertake urban development projects without delay, reads the press release.

The concluding speech by Professor M Sekandar Khan encapsulated the essence of the dialogue and further emphasized the paramount significance of civil society in undertaking multifarious measures to preserve the rich heritage of Chittagong while simultaneously ensuring the city's sustainable development. He believes such dialogue serves as a unifying force, fostering a platform where diverse voices can be amplified and acknowledged.

Following the panel discussion, alumni of the Master of Public Policy and Leadership program took the stage to share their success stories, highlighting the program's instrumental role in helping them establish rewarding careers in the policy space.

Renowned panelists, including prominent figures such as Abul Momen, Aameir Alihussain, Syed Mohammad Abu Daud, M Emdadul Islam, Engineer Subhash Chandra Barua, and eminent academics Professor Dr Kazi Shahdat Kabir, Professor Dr Hamidul Huq, Professor Syeda Zarina Hossain, Urban Planner of Chittagong City Corporation Architect Abdullah Al Omar, Valiant Freedom Fighter Farooq E Azam (Bir Pratik), Bureau Chief of Ekushey Television Rafiqul Bahar and Mr Sayeed Al Noman, participated in a thought-provoking discussion.
