Helal Akbar Chowdhury Babar, former deputy financial affairs secretary of the central Jubo League, has filed a case under the Digital Security Act (DSA) with Chittagong's Cyber Tribunal Court against a journalist of the Daily Jugantar for publishing an article.
The case was lodged against journalist Mahbub Alam Lablu on Wednesday. The court accepted the case and directed the Counter Terrorism Unit to conduct an investigation, said Advocate Mezbah Uddin, Public Prosecutor (PP) of the Chittagong Divisional Cyber Tribunal.
On March 14, the report was published online and print editions of the Daily Jugantar.
According to the complaint, the journalist shared the report with his personal Facebook Profile. According to the report, Helal Akbar is referred as the godfather of extortionists, tenderers, usurpers, and criminal.
In response to the lawsuit, Helal Akbar Chowdhury Babar said: "I am a politician aiming to serve the people. I am well-known throughout Bangladesh. False information has been published in an attempt to damage my reputation. As a law-abiding citizen, I have turned to the legal system. I am optimistic that I will be given a fair trial.''
However, accused journalist Mahbub Alam Lablu said that the news was published based on the complaint.
“I have evidence of all the things mentioned in the report,” he added.
