Sunamganj man killed in clash over TikTok video

A man has been killed and 50 others injured in a deadly clash between residents of two villages over making a TikTok video in Sunamganj's Chhatak upazila.

The clash took place between the residents of Bashkhola and Muktirgaon villages at Surma Bridge's Goal Chattar area from 8:30pm on Wednesday to 12:30am on Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Saiful Islam, 35, a resident of Muktirgaon village.

Two others – Mamun and Sajib – were admitted to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.

According to police and local sources, two young people were making Tik Tok videos around 8pm. At that time, Razzak, son of Ahad Mia, Manna, son of Ahmad Ali of Bashkhola village and their associates stopped them. 

At one point, a fight broke out between the two groups. One of the locals, Mamun was stabbed at one stage. 

This led to a clash between the people of both sides. 

Later, clashes broke out between the residents of the two villages. More than 50 people from both sides were injured in the four-hour-long clash.

After being informed of the scuffle, the law enforcers rushed to the scene and fired blank shots and rubber bullets to bring the situation under control. Several people were also arrested at the scene.

Chhatak Circle Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Ranjoy Chandra Mallik said 20 people have been arrested in this incident. 

The situation is stable now and additional law enforcers have been deployed to the area, he added.
