Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan, the former adviser of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, filed his nomination paper to run as an independent in the Brahmanbaria-2 by-polls.
On Wednesday, his son Mainul Hasan Bhuiyan submitted the necessary papers to District Election Officer Zillur Rahman at upazila election office on behalf of Abdus Sattar.
Along with Mainul Hasan Bhuiyan, more than a hundred leaders and activists from the previous Upazila BNP committee and affiliated groups were present at that time.
On December 29, Abdus Sattar submitted his resignation at the party chief's Gulshan office in the capital citing personal issues.
Later, on Sunday, BNP removed Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan from all posts for "violating party decisions and engaging in anti-party activities".
Party sources said the action against Sattar was taken as he bought a nomination paper to contest the by-polls to the Brahmanbaria-2 seat after it fell vacant following his resignation as a BNP MP.
On December 10, seven BNP lawmakers, including Sattar, announced their resignation from parliament at the party's Golapbagh rally in Dhaka. Later, they submitted their resignation letters to Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury the next day.
He was first elected MP as an independent candidate from Brahmanbaria-2 (Ashuganj and Sarail) in 1979, during BNP founder Ziaur Rahman's tenure, following his failure to secure a party ticket.
He was the founding vice-chairman of the party's Brahmanbaria unit at that time and worked as the president of Brahmanbaria BNP for 28 years.
A lawyer by profession, Sattar won the parliamentary election to Brahmanbaria-2 four more times as a BNP candidate – in 1991, 1996, 2001, and 2018. He was also a state minister during the BNP-led government of 2001-06.
He was also state minister for the law ministry, fisheries ministry, land ministry, as a technocrat cabinet member during BNP's regime from 2001 to 2006.
The Brahmanbaria-2 by-polls will take place on February 1.
