999 call leads to arrest of Tron Company owner

Police have arrested an online business owner who embezzled crores of taka taken from people by falsely promising them high profits.

Lipon Islam Bijoy, 25, was sent to jail through court on Wednesday. Police sought five days to question him. The remand hearing would be held soon, Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Noore Alam Siddiqui said.

Police arrested Bijoy from a rented house in Maltinagar Boubazar area of the city on Tuesday night after receiving a call from 999.

Son of late Gaziul Islam of Nepaltali village in Gabtali Upazila, Bijoy and some people from Dhaka started operating a business named Tron Company. They told the people they would get a profit of Tk5,000 per month against an investment of Tk1,00,000. Many locals got entangled in the trap out of greediness and invested crores of taka.

At one point, the customers could not access the company website and tried unsuccessfully to communicate with Bijoy and his cohorts. The customers went to Bijoy’s house on Wednesday night and demanded their money back.

At that time, a client named Abu Saeed called the national emergency service 999, and the police arrested Bijoy. Later, Abu Saeed filed a case against Bijoy, two of his associates and five unidentified people with Sadar police station.

OC Noore Alam said that an operation was underway to arrest the other accused in the case.
