At least 24 people have been killed and over 30 still missing after a boat capsized in the northern district of Panchagarh.
The incident was reported from the Aowlia Ghat in Boda Upazila’s Marea Union on Sunday afternoon.
Panchagarh Deputy Commissioner Jahirul Islam confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
He said that the number of deceased is likely to increase.
According to DC Jahirul, the boat upturned in the Korotoa River with around 80 passengers on board.
A majority of the passengers were returning after offering puja for the Mahalaya at the Bodeshari Temple.
According to Boda UNO Md Solaiman Ali, the overloaded engine-run shallow boat started rock after going a little far from shore and sank when it reached the middle of the river.
Some survivors managed to swim ashore and are participating in the rescue operations.
He said that the bodies are yet to be identified and the victims’ families will be given Tk20,000 from the district administration.
