Coal extraction at Barapukuria coal mine starts 20 days early

Coal extraction at Barapukuria coal mine is set to begin 20-days early after remaining shut for nearly three months.

Trial extractions of coal in a new phase of the mine is expected to begin on Wednesday, reports Bangla Tribune.

Coal was last extracted from phase 1310 of the mine on May 1.

The coal extracted from the mines fires the Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant which supplies electricity to the northern region.

As extractions stopped, concerns rose regarding power production which could exacerbate the load shedding situation in the northern districts.

Extractions at the new phase were expected to start somewhere in August, after the last phase was declared abandoned by authorities on June 19.

However, Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL) authorities began trial extractions earlier than expected with additional manpower, says Petrobangla.
