At least 12 people were killed in road accidents across the country late on Friday and early on Saturday.
In Tangail, four people, including two brothers, were killed after a bus and a paddle-van collided in Tangail.
The incident was reported early on Saturday at 12am on Tangail’s Dhanbari road, confirmed Dhanbaro Police SI Ashiquzzaman.
The deceased are Saiful Islam, 22, his brother Mridul, 15, Hassan, 19 and Babul Karmakar, 50.
According to police, a Dhaka-bound bus collided with a paddle-van on the Nalla Bazar area.
Van driver Bablu Karmakar and Saiful Islam died on spot. Locals rushed the other two to the local upazila health complex where they died while undergoing treatment.
In Bogura, two people were killed in separate road accidents in Sariakandi and Shajahanpur upazilas.
Hausi Begum, 65, was run over by an auto-van while Sakib Hassan, 19, died when a bus ran him over on Friday evening.
Both of the victims died while undergoing treatment at Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College.
According to Sariakandi’s Hatsherpur Union Chairman Noor Mehedi Hassan, Hausi Begum was returning home on a battery-run auto-van after collecting Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) rice.
She was critically injured when the auto-van collided with another one.
She was first taken to the local upazila health complex with broken ribs and later shifted to the Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College where she died.
Meanwhile, Sakib Hassan and his friend Sunny Ahmed, 17, were on their motorbike when an ambulance hit them, causing them to fall on the highway.
At this time, a Rajbari Paribahan ran them over, critically injuring both.
Sherpur Police Out Post in-charge AKM Baniul Alam confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
He said that the bus and the motorcycle has been seized and a case has been filed over the matter.
In Comilla’s Daudkandi Upazila, three motorcyclists were run over by a bus on Saturday morning.
The deceased were identified as Russell Prodhan, 25, journalist of local daily Shomajkatha; and his two friends Md Sharif, 26, and Md Tafsir, 20.
The incident was reported from Gouripur area, confirmed Daudkandi Highway Police Deputy Inspector Md Salauddin.
According to police, a motorcycle with three people suddenly crossed a Dhaka-bound Al Baraqah Paribahan bus at around 10:30am.
In a bid to save the motorcycle, the bus swerved but ended up running over the motorcycle before upturning on the side of the road.
In Gazipur, three people including a father and daughter were killed when a bus crashed into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Rajendrapur-Tok Road in Kapashia upazila in the early hours of Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Selim Mia, 40, his daughter Sadia, 8, and Nurjahan, 35, all hailing from Kishoreganj, said AFM Nasim, officer-in-charge of Kapashia police station
The accident occurred when the bus hit the Kishoreganj-bound CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Cheorit Ilu intersection, leaving at least five people injured.
Of the injured, two people died on the way to Shaheed Tajuddin Medical College and Hospital while another one passed away during treatment.
In Chittagong, a driver of auto rickshaw was killed as it was hit by a microbus at Sitakundu upazila on Dhaka Chittagong highway.
The deceased was identified as Md Tareq, 19, son of Nurul Islam from Akilpur village in Bashbaria union, said Najmul Hasan, officer-in-charge of Baroawlia Highway police station.
The accident occurred around 8am near Choto Kumira area when a Dhaka-bound microbus hit the auto-rickshaw as it was crossing the road from the wrong side after filling fuel from a nearby filling station.
The driver died on the spot and legal actions will be taken in this regard, said the OC.
