International human rights organization Article 19 has expressed deep shock and concern over the recent murder and the humiliation of two Hindu teachers in Savar and Narail.
The rights group in a statement on Thursday called for speedy trials following proper investigations into all such incidents.
The recurring incidents of attacks against teachers in different parts of the country in recent times are a manifestation of growing intolerance and hatred that is increasing lately in the society, the organization said.
“The erosion of democratic values, the suppression of dissent, and the lack of practicing pluralism have created an intolerant and hostile environment, with a culture of impunity and fear now exacerbating the situation.
“In order to alleviate this intolerance and hate, Article 19 stresses eliminating the prevailing culture of impunity and fear,” said the statement.
Previously, a science and math teacher at a school in Munshiganj was arrested on March 22 allegedly for insulting religion after he discussed in the classroom the distinction between religion and science.
Faruq Faisel, regional director for Article 19 South Asia, said: ‘‘All the teachers who have been subjected to persecution in recent times are from religious minorities. The nature of the attack on them indicates that these were planned and part of systematic oppression. The trend should not be ignored by terming it merely isolated incidents.
“The Constitution of Bangladesh guarantees equal rights and justice to every citizen, while it is the job of the state to ensure that the citizens enjoy these rights without any fear. These incidents are undermining the philosophy of the great freedom war of 1971. Therefore, the government must take swift and exemplary action in every case of systematic torture and harassment. The culture of impunity and fear must end.’’
