Dhaka’s train communications with Chittagong and Sylhet were restored on Monday afternoon after 10 hours of suspension following the derailment of three compartments of a Dhaka-bound freight.
The accident took place around 4am on Monday. After the rescue operation, the train movement became normal at 1:45pm.
Railway sources said a container train was going to Dhaka from port city Chittagong and when it reached Rajapur railway station three compartments veered off the tracks at 4am.
Dhaka TribuneRajapur railway station master Rezaul Karim said the rail communications were restored around 1:45pm when a relief train from Akhaura station removed the bogies from the tracks.
Laksam Railway Junction Assistant Engineer Liaquat Ali confirmed that three bogies derailed due to a mechanical fault when the crashed freight train from Chittagong reached the Rajapur railway station area around 4am.
As a result, train services on Chittagong-Dhaka and Chittagong-Sylhet routes were stopped. Several passenger and freight trains were stranded at various stations. Upon receiving the news, several rescue trains from Laksam and Akhaura railway junctions reached the spot.
