Five held over assault on tourists in Jaflong

Police have detained five people over a surprise assault by volunteers of the upazila administration on tourists at Sylhet’s Jaflong. 

At least six tourists were injured during the assault.

Those arrested are Nazim Uddin, 23, Sohel Rana, 21, Janar Abedin alias Joynal, 40, Laxman Chandra Das, 21, and Md Selim Ahmed, 21.

Among them, Selim and Laxman were arrested by the tourist police at around 3pm. The other three were arrested on the spot at around 5pm.

The incident took place at 1:30pm on Thursday in front of the ticket counter at the Jaflong tourist centre.

Locals said the staff at the counter started arguing with the tourists about buying tickets to visit Jaflong area. At one point, some volunteers attacked the tourists with sticks and clubs

The video of the incident has gone viral on social media.

Sylhet Superintendent of Police Mohammad Farid Uddin told Dhaka Tribune: “Additional police have been deployed at the Jaflong tourist centre.”

"Everyone involved in the attack on tourists will be brought under the law," he added.
