Police on Saturday arrested a death row convict, who had been on the run for 27 years after killing his wife, from Chapainawabganj.
The arrestee, Md Nazrul Islam, 55, was arrested from a remote area of Sundarpur Union at around 3am on Saturday. He hails from Rajshahi’s Tanore upazila.
Nazrul was handed over to the court in the afternoon, said Additional Superintendent of Police (ADP) Iftekhar Alam.
On May 26, 1995, a murder case was filed against Nazrul with Tanore police station for murdering his wife, under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
Following investigations, the investigating officer of the case filed a charge sheet in the Rajshahi District and Sessions Judge's Court.
Later, the court sentenced Nazrul to death.
The court also fined him Tk5,000, in default of which he would get an additional three months of rigorous imprisonment.
As the accused fled from Rajshahi as soon as the case was registered, an arrest warrant was also issued against him.
According to police sources, Nazrul started living in Chapainawabganj under the pseudonym of Md Aziz.
