Cricket-mad Chittagong teenager commits suicide due to poverty

An HSC first-year student in Chittagong has committed suicide reportedly for failing to cope with the poverty his family has been going through.

He wanted to be a great cricketer, said family members and locals, but poverty was an obstacle to fulfilling his dreams. This made him unbalanced.

The deceased was identified as Sagar Majumdar, 18, of EPZ area in the city. He was a student of Islamia University College.

Sagar committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling of his house in the absence of family members on Thursday night, said Sadekur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Pachlaish police station.

Later, he was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where the doctor declared him dead at around 11pm.

Family sources said Sagar's dream was to be a cricketer but his family had to fight poverty due to his father’s illness.
