Police have registered the complaint of an underage footballer in Mymensingh against a Chhatra League leader as an attempt to rape case.
The survivor, an eleventh-grader at Nandail’s Shahid Smiriti Adarsha College, brought allegations of rape against Wahidul Alam Fakir Foisal, former general secretary of Chhatra League’s Nandail upazila unit.
However, police on April 23 registered an attempt to rape case in this connection.
“I went to the police on the day after the incident with my father,” the rape survivor told Dhaka Tribune.
“The OC took me to another room and asked me some questions which embarrassed me,” she added.
The girl’s parents said the police had not lodged the case they had wanted to file and now feared they would not get justice.
Key accused Wahidul was arrested on Wednesday, Nandail Model Police OC Mizanur Rahman Akand said.
He added that the case had in fact been registered based on the victim’s statement.
Asked about the matter, Mymensingh Superintendent of Police Md Ahamar-uz-Zaman said steps would be taken if any negligence was found.
According to the rape survivor, who is a member of the Nandail under-17 girls’ football team, on April 22, Wahidul called her to her college on the pretext of signing a scholarship file.
He then took her behind the administrative building, held a knife to her throat and raped her while recording the incident.
His accomplices Alamin and another unnamed man had aided him, she said, adding that they had threatened to release the video on the internet if she told anyone anything.
According to the rape survivor, Wahidul, who is married and has a child, had asked her to spend time with him every week, threatening to release the video otherwise.
College staffer Abdur Rahim, a witness of the incident, said he had gone to the spot after hearing the girl’s cries for help.
“But I had to leave because Wahidul threatened me with a knife. I left and called the principal, who then told me to get them out of there,” he said.
Principal Badal Kumar Datta reportedly did not follow up on the matter.
Terming the incident appalling, he said justice must be served if the incident had indeed taken place.
Now in a distraught state of mind, the girl told Dhaka Tribune: “I want a fair trial. I want to live.”
She said she had won several medals and certificates in her short football career.
"My dream is to play for the national team," she added.
