Two people have died in hospital after being injured in a clash over the formation of a committee at the Eidgah ground in Shahjadpur, Sirajganj, and raising money for the Imam of Salanga mosque.
The deceased were identified as Khorshed Alam, 55, of Manoharpur village in Salanga upazila, and Biplob Hossain, 42, of Harinathpur village under Kayempur union of Shahjadpur upazila.
Khorshed died on the way to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital (SZMC) on Saturday morning and Biplob died at a hospital in Dhaka late on Friday night. Seven people were injured in the incident.
Police have arrested 7 people in connection with the incidents. They are Yusuf Ali, 54, Al-Amin, 34, Anwar Hossain, 45, Motaharul Haque, 65, Habibul Haque Harun, 35, Abdus Sattar Khan, 45 and Shakil Hossain Sarkar, 23.
Salanga police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Quader Jilani said Khorshed had an argument with retired Sergeant Wazed Ali Sarkar, elder brother of Mosque Committee President Yusuf Ali, over raising the imam's salary at the Chawk Manoharpur Madhyapara Jame Masjid after Friday prayers.
At one stage of the argument, Yusuf Ali and his men came out of the mosque and pounced on Khorshed Alam. He was seriously injured. Upon receiving the news, his family rushed him to the hospital.
He died on the way to Bogra SZMC on Saturday morning due to a deteriorating health condition.
On the other hand, locals of Harirampur in Shahjadpur said that there was a clash between Lutfar Rahman and Akmal groups on Friday afternoon over the formation of the committee at Eidgah ground.
At least seven people were injured. Of the injured, Biplob was sent to a hospital in Dhaka in critical condition.
Biplob died while undergoing treatment in Dhaka. Among the injured, Jahangir Master, Torab Ali, Abdul Matin and Shakil Hossain have been admitted to the hospital.
Shahjadpur police OC Shahid Mahmud Khan confirmed the incident and said the body of the deceased had been sent to Sirajganj 250-bed Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib General Hospital for autopsy.
