Former Sylhet mayor Kamran’s house attacked during clash in city

The house of former Sylhet mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran was attacked in a clash between two local groups in the northeastern city.

At least 50 people from both sides were injured in the clash that erupted out on Wednesday around 8pm.

Witnesses said shots were fired and shops were vandalized in the nearly hour-long clash.

According to City Councilor Nazrul Islam Munim of ward 14, there were some disagreements between two groups of youth in Chararpara and Machimpur areas.

Even though the councilors had resolved the matter, a clash broke out on Wednesday.

At one point, the people of Machimpur attacked late mayor Kamran’s house in Chararpara.

Meanwhile, the people of Chararpara reportedly entered Machimpur and vandalized the shops there.

Amongst those injured in the firing is Assistant Sub-Inspector Hassan of the Sylhet metro police’s Kotowali station.

At least 50 others have been injured, said Councillor Moshtak Ahmed of Ward 23. “Police reached the scene and brought the clash under control in an hour,” he said.

Sylhet Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, local Awami League leader Asaduddin Ahmed, a former general secretary of the metropolitan unit and other officials visited Kamran’s residence following the clash.
