Man hacked to death for reporting drug traders in Narayanganj

A man in Narayanganj was hacked to death on Wednesday allegedly for reporting drug traders to a local newspaper.

A group of people tortured Shamim Hossain, 30, near a shop at Fatulla upazila’s local Isdair Rail Line around 12:30pm, said Officer-in-Charge Rakibuzzaman of Fatullah model police station. Shamim was a gas cylinder trader.

Police detained two people from the spot. One of them was identified as Ali Hossain.

Police and witnesses said drug traders Razzak and his accomplices started attacking Shamim with hammers and sharp weapons in front of Razzak’s shop.

Upon hearing Shamim's cries for help, locals rushed to the spot and captured Ali Hossain and another person.

Shamim was taken to Narayanganj General (Victoria) Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The deceased’s wife said someone called Shamim on his mobile phone around 11am to meet. Later, at around 12:30pm, locals informed her of the incident.

“My husband did not commit any crime. He only reported drug dealers Razzak, and Ali to a local newspaper, and the news was published.”

OC Rakibuzzaman said Shamim’s body was kept at the hospital’s morgue for an autopsy. “We are preparing to file a case in this regard.”

The officer, however, made no comments on drug trading in the area.
