20 injured as RMG workers clash with police in Chittagong

At least 20 people including five policemen were injured in a clash between police and readymade garment (RMG) workers in the port city’s Boalkhali upazila on Monday.

Regent Textile's management obstructed the workers’ entry into the factory when they tried to collect their dues.

Later, they staged demonstrations in front of the factory.

On information, police rushed to the spot and charged batons to disperse them, triggering a clash, said acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tahmina Akter.

The workers also threw brickbats targeting police during the clash.

The injured people were taken to Boalkhali Upazila Health Complex.

The agitated workers said the factory authorities declared to suspend their production on March 16.

As the workers demanded their dues for the month of March and April, the owners of the factory assured them of clearing their dues on Monday.

Later, they put up barricades on Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar-Arakan road by burning tires and halting traffic movement.

They also halted vehicular movement over Kalurghat Bridge during the clash.
