Minister: Sundarbans tiger count stands at 114

The latest count puts the total number of tigers at the Sundarbans at 114, says Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Shahab Uddin. 

He disclosed the statistics in response to lawmaker Didarul Alam’s question at the Parliament on Monday. 

In 2015, camera trapping found 106 tigers in the mangrove forest, while the latest survey in 2018 puts the number at 114. 

Moreover, there are 150,000 deer, around 200 crocodiles and around 50,000 monkeys, he added. 

Meanwhile, in response to another question posed by lawmaker Benjir Ahmed, the minister said that trees cover 22.37% of the forest while the land area comprises 14.10%. 

According to the minister, under social forestry, over 102,000 hectares of woods and block gardens have been created from between FY 1980-81 to FY 2020-21. 

Another, over 75,700 kilometres of strip gardens have been created, involving over 726,000 beneficiaries.
